You will not be taught anything by saying that the primary function of the staircase is to access from one shelf to another. But why should we be satisfied with this? Each corner of the staircase can, in itself, house a small library. Between the steps that become storage spaces, the risers and the support wall that play the role of library, you are spoiled for choice.

The concept of the staircase library is born from a growing need to optimize our space but the result is not just about the useful. Indeed, the staircase library is becoming trendy: a decorative element in itself, it fits into any interior while increasing the living space.

The staircase, with its niches and recesses, lends itself to a transformation. Below, a library has been set up below the staircase, taking advantage of the empty space that can also be turned into a cupboard or cupboard.

Here, the architects opted for a wooden bookcase cabinet that also serves as a staircase. Practical and compact, the furniture is rigid enough to play the role of a staircase.

In the following example, it is a beautiful wood bookcase that extends from floor to ceiling. We imagine almost in a municipal library where you have to climb on a ladder to reach the books in height. There, the bookcase furniture also becomes TV stand and wall decor.

If you prefer a more airy, uncluttered style, opt for a minimalist staircase, keep a blank wall of support and take advantage of the space under the stairs to hang a shelf or two. Admire this small decorative corner that was created under the stairs, a shelf at the ground and art paintings on the wall draw a triangular space well optimized.

Here’s another example where a library has been set up under the stairs. In black wood, the library below contrasts with the whiteness of the decor and we love the reading corner thus formed, with its two armchairs and the directional lamp on the ceiling.

Our next example stands out for its clever design. Viewed in profile, the wall shelves align with the steps but it is only when changing angle, as in the photo that follows, that we understand that the stairs are actually part of the shelves.

As you can see in the following photo, the staircase was custom built to fit into the continuity of the shelves. A minimalistic balustrade is drawn on the right side for more comfort since the stairs are floating.

It is a more traditional staircase that we discover now, but whose originality lies in the library embedded in the wall of support. Climb a few steps, catch a book and continue your way.

The wall of support has been richly adorned with shelves which, several times, extend to join the staircase, thus creating corners conducive to reading. A staircase that becomes a library and a bench is ingenious, is not it?

Here is a staircase library that is full of originality. Simple in its realization, the staircase is distinguished by the depth of its steps that extend beyond the riser to form niches, perfect for laying books horizontally.

This time, the space under the stairs has been laid out with a sofa from which one can reach a large part of the books of the mural library. The other part is accessible via the staircase which, thanks to the absence of risers, offers a certain transparency and does not impose itself in the decor.

Do not be afraid to play on contrasts. A stone staircase will be well complemented by a wooden bookcase as in the following interior.

If your space allows, you can opt for a sculptural staircase that spirals into the heart of the room. For more character, dress your back wall of a designer wall bookcase and the decor will be complete.

You do not need to cover your entire wall. If you prefer a more uncluttered look, opt for a built-in shelf as in the following picture. Simple, this wooden shelf completes the steps of the stairs and why not imagine a bench along the window where one could sit to read the book that has just been chosen.

Our last example raises the wood on a pedestal. Instead of building a staircase in the middle of the room, the architects decided to add a wall of support that acts as a bookcase. Thus, the library and the staircase, made of the same type of wood, marry perfectly.
