The Moroccan tile fascinates with its details and its intense nuances. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful tiles. Do you know that this type of tile and its decoration by hand are one of the first examples of abstract art long before its appearance in Europe?
The French painter Henri Matisse was very attracted by oriental art and its decorative forms. He often made trips to Algeria, Andalusia and then to Tangier. In Morocco, he finds a new light and a new creative spirit. Moroccan culture inspires him to create a large number of works of art.

Mediterranean style, the zelliges bring to each interior an authentic and oriental aspect. Originally from Mediterranean antiquity and the Middle East, in principle they were used to decorate the walls and fountains. This type of tile is strongly present in the Arab-Andalusian architecture in Morocco, Spain and Algeria. There is a wide variety of colors, shades and patterns that add character to any room. Usually, their composition is based on hand-worked clay, most often from the city of Fez in Morocco. Then the clay is enamelled and cooked in a traditional wood oven. The oven temperature is inconsistent. Thanks to this, the tiles take a color full of different shades. Then each tile is worked by hand to finalize it. His pose requires more attention and care than laying conventional tiles. Often Moroccan tiles are placed without joints, it is still not recommended to do this. The joints limit the tension between the tiles and this helps to avoid the appearance of cracks. You can mix different tiles to create a personalized, original and colorful interior. Very aesthetic, zelliges are, unfortunately, less resistant to moisture than conventional tiles. It is not recommended to dress showers or very wet rooms with this type of tile.
