Japanese gardens called “stone” recreate landscapes of rivers and mountains. Sand and gravel symbolize rivers while stones represent mountains. Japanese gardens are also often landscaped with moss. Koi ponds are another recurring element in the Japanese garden. They represent lakes and seas and bring color and liveliness to the garden. Their size varies according to the functions that are attributed to them (relaxing or just decorative).
