The principle of this practical equipment is simple: a wooden table, under which is placed an electric heater, the whole is covered with a large cover that is wedged between the wooden table and a board that allows to keep the heat. This functional unit has existed in Japan for a long time. In the past, instead of an electric radiator, there was a coal fire in its place. Today, even in Japan, charcoal kotatsu are rare. The most common are the electric kotatsu.

In Japanese tradition, kotatsu is a real meeting and discussion center for fpyers. In general, we sit on zabutons on the tatami mats to drink tea and share moments with family. Today, the kotatsu has modernized, it is now variable in shape and size: round or square, large or very large, luxurious or simple. The most classic model is oki-gotatsu with the coffee table on the floor. She asks to sit “Japanese style” with her legs bent. The second known model is the hori-gotatsu that allows you to sit like a chair. A westernized model has even appeared: the kotatsu, which represents a high table with chairs also called the kotatsu dining.
