Diverted from its original scientific function, terrestrial globes are at the base of computing and observation tools. The oldest terrestrial globe was created by the cartographer Martin Behaim in Nuremberg, Germany at the end of 15th century. It was called Erdapfel (potato in German) and was made of metal. At that time, America and Australia still did not appear on the globe. It had a diameter of 51 cm. Until then, the globes were always painted and unique. The cartographer Martin Waldseemüller adapts, at the beginning of the 16th century, printing to the needs of the manufacturers of globes by creating spindles. It is also the first that introduces the word “America” into cartography.
