What wood for my bow and my arrows?
We choose a piece of dead wood, long and dry. The key is to choose a piece of wood well law, smooth and flexible, this is very important for the performance and power of your bow. It must be about two meters in length and five in diameter. If the piece of wood at your disposal is always wet, to dry, you can apply glue and put back after 24 hours. The glue accelerates the drying of the wood. Of course, it is better (and greener!) To find already dead and dry wood.

Size and length to make a perfect and adapted bow
Usually, the bow should be adapted to the size of the archer. A longbow archer could shoot up to 12 arrows per minute! So we choose its arc according to its size as well as according to the desired power. Indeed, in archer language, we say “elongated”. The length is the distance between the rope hand and the arrow rest when the archer is in the shooting position and ready to release the rope. This elongation is unique for everyone. So your size will determine the length of your bow.
If you make 160, then your bow should have a height of 66 “. If you make 175, then your bow will have a height of 68 “. Here is a small chart that will allow you to easily locate and choose the size of your bow and the elongation with precision, this is very important for its performance and your own comfort:

How to make a long and classic bow with a longbow?
The ideal material for making a bow is the Italian yew. This is very rare nowadays, although at the time it was the most popular material for making a bow. Let’s go to manufacturing. It is very simple. All you need to do is cut two notches at each end of the bow. The notches should be approximately halfway up the arc and should be approximately 2.5 centimeters from each end of the arc. Similarly, the notches should be on the opposite side of the arc within the natural curve of the branch. This will help if they are at the widest possible angle. These notches will be used to hold the bow cord in place when in use.

Make arrows for his bow
Now it’s the turn of arrows, the most difficult to make indeed!
Arrows can be made with either a tree branch or a wooden dowel. Wooden dowels are preferred because they work best. For branch arrows there is an additional brico step that you can skip if you have decided to use wooden pegs.
