What are the existing composter models? The most common and used models are those in tanks. It can be silo or barrel, and made of plastic, wood or frigolite. It is most often sold as a kit in shops. There are also open compostors in heaps that are suitable for large garden owners. For city dwellers wishing to place a composter in their kitchen or balcony, there are two solutions – composter without or with earthworms. The latter is called the vermicomposteur or vermicomposteur. There are several vermicomposter models – vertical, horizontal, single-bin or multi-bin.
The difference of having or not having peatworms in the composter is in the decomposition time. Worms accelerate the composting process. If the thought of having a tray with earthworms does not tempt you, do not worry, you are not the only ones! Many people only start with a small composter without worms and it works as well, believe us! It just takes a little more patience. If you recycle the good organic waste you do not risk bad smells.

The natural technique of vermicomposting is to place in a container (the composter) earthworms (earthworms) that feed on organic waste. Earthworms eat the equivalent of their weight per day of organic matter. They break down your rubbish for you. Soil worms prefer a temperature of +/- 20 ° C. After a phase of digestion, they reject a material devoid of odor, the consistency of a soil called vermicompost. Be careful that the temperature in your apartment does not rise because above 40 ° C, worms will no longer live. In fact, the temperature at the apartment remains fairly constant which makes an ideal place for the worms to develop optimally.

Natasha’s Green echoes recommends the vermicomposteur d’intérieur manufactured by The Earth Box. This interior composter was developed and manufactured in Lorraine, France. It is designed in wood and with wheels for easy movement. The fact that it is made of wood puts it in the first positions in the classification of ecological composters. It was designed by a French couple, Jérémie and his wife Amandine, who live in Nancy. They wanted to create a solution for people who did not have a terrace or balcony to compost their household waste at home. At first, Jeremy thought you needed to have bricola skills to make a wood composter yourself. After some research, he realized that it was simpler than he thought. That’s how the first vermicomposter The Earth Box was born…

Making it yourself is easy enough. Try to use recovery material for a 100% eco-friendly composter! Making a composter is simple. You can do this by using a flower pot with the bottom hole in plastic. For this you will also need two saucers, potting soil and soil. One of the saucers is placed above the pot to collect the compost liquid (called worm tea) and the second lid saucer is used. It is of course, instead of a jar, to use a trash can or a bucket that will pierce the bottom. It is also recommended to bury the trash on the sides so that the compost is well ventilated.

The right ingredients for a composter
What are the “right ingredients” for successful composting? Almost all vegetable and organic household waste is allowed. Fruits, vegetables, peelings, tops, stumps, dried fruits, eggshells, tea, coffee grounds. Beware of peelings of garlic, onion, shallots that smell too much. Paper and cardboard are highly recommended. They must be wet beforehand. It is strongly discouraged to put in its compost any kind of waste meat and fish because they have a very strong and unpleasant odor. As well as all kinds of dairy products, citrus fruits and rhubarb are to be avoided.

Some garbage is composed faster than others. The potato peels, the avocado skins are long to transform. Peels of apple, cucumber, zucchini are transformed quickly, for example. Normally, it takes four to six months to turn your waste into compost. All non-organic waste is prohibited: plastic, metal and others.

Large pieces of waste are not recommended. The smaller the waste is, the better it is for your composter. The general rule is never to put more than 25% of the same waste in a composter.

Maintenance tips
The composter does not require much maintenance. You just have to stir it from time to time. While stirring, there will probably be an unpleasant smell, but it’s part of the game. If you’ve made holes on the sides, probably there will be no smell. Mixing allows good oxygenation and homogenization of compost waste. If you want to speed up the fermentation process, you can add natural activators such as groundworms Eisenia Andrei. You can easily find them and buy them online or in fishing shops for just a few euros. These little creatures breed very fast, so you will only need two boxes. Occasional watering increases composting performance. However, as you throw away new organic waste, consider throwing some potting soil over it.

In general, there are two basic methods of composting: heaped or silo. If you have a garden, you can afford to compost in piles. If you have a small space, a balcony or you want to compost in your kitchen, then the silo method will be the most suitable for you. The great advantage of silo composting is that it takes up less space. It does not matter if your compost is inside or outside your home, never let it dry out and always water it and cover it. Humidity and aeration are of great importance.

Did you know that the composter is often called the gardener’s black gold ? The process of transforming your waste results in a fertilizer, natural and of excellent quality. This composted organic material will make your plants healthier and more resistant to disease. The more different compost you have, the more compost you will be fertilizing. Degraded by microorganisms, organic matter is transformed into a substance rich in nutrients. Some people advise to have two composts. When the fermentation is finished in the first tank, the second one is filled.
